Built by the Del Webb Corporation in 1960, Sun City is the largest master-planned retirement community in the world, with a population of 45,000. World-famous for its active, resort retirement lifestyle, Sun City has set the standard that many other retirement communities now follow.
Friends and neighbors, the arts, physical fitness, and golf are key components of the active-adult lifestyle. Hundred of clubs and organizations allow neighbors to gather and participate in their favorite pastimes, from aerobics to woodworking. Sun City is self-contained with many retail centers, restaurants, 11 golf courses, three country clubs, and seven recreation centers which offer swimming, tennis, bowling, fishing, and other activities. It's no wonder that volunteerism is strong in this active retirement community. Sun City Prides is a nonprofit organization that helps keep Sun City clean. Though police protection is provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, it is augmented by members of the Sheriff's Posse of Sun City, men and women who volunteer 24 hours a day. The Posse prevents crime through neighborhood watch programs, vacation watch, traffic control and home security programs. As an unincorporated entity, the town relies on Maricopa County for services such as law enforcement, street repairs and zoning protection. Just 12 miles northwest of Phoenix, Sun City's nearby attractions include Lake Pleasant, White Tank Regional Park, West Valley Art Museum, Sun Bowl Outdoor Amphitheatre, and Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum.
As a retirement community, Sun City is age-restricted: one member of the household must be 55 or older, and no one under the age of 18 is permitted to live there. Sun City real estate options include single-family detached homes, condominiums, townhouses, and land lots. As of March 2009, the average price for a home in Sun City was $131,000.
